Marvelous presentation of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Agra is a major tourist destination famous among the worldwide tourists as they all love coming to this destination in order to explore the striking and magnificent Taj Mahal, built on the banks of Yamuna River. This white marble architecture add to the glory enjoyed by Agra, which is also known for its lively and frenzied bazaars, historic temples as well as several other heritage sites of olden monuments and tombs.

 

The city was founded in 1526 by the Mughals and apart from Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri also enjoys immense significance, thus making Agra home to the world’s three prominent heritage sites. Other glorious offerings are Sikandra, Itmad-ud-Daulah Tomb, Radha Swami Samadhi, Taj Mahotsav, Chinni Ka Roja, Mariyam’s Tomb and Jama Masjid. In fact due to the charisma of Taj mahal, this city enjoys the status of ‘Romantic City of India’. It has a sub-tropical climate and best time to visit is in the months of March, October and November.

 

Major sights:

Taj Mahal

Mausoleum built of white marble, was constructed during 1631 to 1648 in the memory of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaz Mahal. This architectural marvel tells the story of their eternal love, which is why people from all over the globe head to this grand site.

 

Agra Fort

Great Mughal Emperor gave an order for the construction of Agra Fort, which is similar in design to Red Fort in Delhi and was built in 1565 A.D. This crescent-shaped fort poses splendid exteriors and its presentations are Moti Masjid, Diwan-e-Am, Diwan-e-Khaas, Jehangir's Palace, Khaas Mahal, Shish Mahal and Musamman.

 

Fatehpur Sikri

This impressive red sandstone was built on the orders of Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1564 A.D and there is an interesting story behind its formation. It goes as, when Akbar had no heir, he made several visits to holy men to get his wish for a son granted. At one time, he went to Sheikh Salim Chishti, who lived in a village of Sikri. The saint made a prediction that he’d be soon blessed with a son and when his wish-came-true, in order to state his appreciation, he built his capital city and christened it as Fatehpur Sikri. It offers exotic attractions such as Sheikh Salim Chishti town, Diwan-e-Am, Diwan-e-Khaas, Buland Darwaja, Panch Mahal, Jodha  Bai Palace and Birbal Bhawan.
