Referred as Venice of East and City of Lakes, Udaipur is a city known for its scenic locations, which are in abundance and the Rajput-era palaces. Due to the presence of eminent lakes and palaces around the city, it is considered as one of the best romantic locations in India. The natural surroundings and the view of Aravalli mountain ranges are just breathtaking. Udaipur is a city where you’ll find large number of palaces, temples, gardens and lakes, as well as the gallant past of Mewari rulers shine through. Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Udai Sagar and Swaroop Sagar are the most famous lakes in Udaipur.
The city was founded by brave Rajput King Maharana Udai Singh and its descendants fought several battles with immense valor to protect the land from external invasions of Mughals.
City Palace Udaipur
The palace stands on the east bank of Pichola Lake, with various other palaces, which were built in 1559. From the balconies of the palace you can enjoy the panaromic views of Jag Niwas. The main way to enter it is through Tripolia Gate, which was built in 1725. On the way you come across terraces, corridors and gardens. The Palace has several of antique articles, paintings, furniture as well as utensils, which draw the attention of large number of tourists.
Dilkhush Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal and Krishna Vilas are the other popular palaces. Celebration Mall in the city is one of the most popular in Rajasthan and takes pride in being the only Heritage mall in India. City Palace’s previous guesthouses such as Shiv Niwas Palace and Fateh Prakash Palace have been changed over into heritage hotels.
Sahelion Ki Bari
This beautiful garden was designed in the eighteenth century for the women from royal family. At this place they use to spend their time in leisure. Lotus pool, fountains, lawns, flowerbeds and marble pavilions add charm to it.
Island in Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir is the place where Shah Jahan retreated to as he revolted against his father. This magnificent Hindu temple is decked up with splendid architecture and sculptures. There you will also find a restaurant run by HRH group of hotels. Built in 1961 by Maharana Jagat Singh, Jag Mandir’s major highlight is the aarti performed during sunrise and sunset. In the temple, you find black stone idol of Lord Jagannath (incarnation of Lord Vishnu).
It was earlier known as Sajjangarh Palace as it was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1884. Situated high on a hill, the palace used to be the much-loved destination of royal family during the monsoon season. It also has famous sunset spot.
Lake Pichola & Fateh Sagar Lake
Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake are the most famous among the other lakes in the city. Lake Pichola has two islands, namely Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir, whereas Fateh Sagar Lake is in the north of Lake Pichola.
